Lawmakers file emergency motions on footballers’ citizenship, Trump visit

KUALA LUMPUR: Two emergency motions have been submitted in the Dewan Rakyat to debate the citizenship of footballers and the visit of US President Donald Trump.

Kampar MP Chong Zhemin requests an urgent debate on FIFA’s suspension of seven mixed‑heritage players over nationality documents.

“It should be debated and decided in Parliament as to what the government’s immediate action will be,” he said.

He called for a public explanation on administrative, disciplinary and legal measures against the Football Association of Malaysia and any individuals involved.

Chong’s letter is addressed to Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin and is dated Oct 7.

He added that he calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to probe failures in verification and possible forgery of official documents.

Chong said stricter guidelines should verify naturalisation documents, including cross‑referencing with records in the country of origin.

“There should also be a comprehensive audit of ongoing athlete naturalisation cases to ensure compliance,” he added.

On Monday (October 6), FIFA presented evidence of forged documents in Malaysia’s mixed‑heritage player registrations.

The ruling raises serious doubts over governance and verification processes at the Football Association of Malaysia.

FIFA also highlighted inconsistencies between original birth certificates obtained by FIFA and those submitted by FAM.

FAM said it will file an official appeal with FIFA.

Another motion seeks a debate on Malaysia’s invitation to US President Donald Trump.

Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim filed it.

He said the motion was submitted to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker on Monday.

“The motion must be raised urgently as the Asean Summit is less than a month away,” he said.

He said Parliament’s decision is crucial to avoid recognising “a leader who supports Zionist oppression.”

On Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said Trump was invited to the Asean Summit.

He said the invitation was issued through Malaysia’s role as ASEAN chair.

Mohamad said the chair must invite dialogue partners based on Asean’s principles of neutrality and centrality.
