Five teen motorcyclists plead guilty to obstructing ambulance in Kuala Kangsar

KUALA KANGSAR: Five 17-year-old male students were brought before the Kuala Kangsar Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (Oct 29) after a viral video showed them obstructing an ambulance on the North-South Expressway, Sinar Harian reports.

The Malay language daily reported that they were charged with riding motorcycles in a manner dangerous to the public at KM249 on the southbound lane of the expressway.

The offence occurred at 3:15pm on Oct 19.

The charge was made under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of RM15,000 if convicted.

All defendants pleaded guilty to the charge of dangerous riding after the charges were read separately before Magistrate Mohd Shazmeer Zamhari.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Mirza Zulaikha Mohd Fadzly, while all defendants were represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer, Hennie Soraya Hanafi.

The court set bail at RM1,500 for each defendant with one surety and scheduled Jan 5, 2026, for sentencing, pending a character report.

All defendants posted the bail.

Previously, the media reported that the five students were arrested in the Bukit Mertajam area, Penang, between 3pm and 9pm on Monday (Oct 27) by a team of officers and members from the Perak Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department (JSPT).

The arrest followed a viral video showing a group of youths riding motorcycles dangerously while blocking an ambulance on the expressway.

Initial investigations revealed the incident occurred while the ambulance was en route to assist accident victims at KM260 on the same highway, Sinar Harian reported.
