Are Singaporean Chinese Men “Least Attractive”? Viral Chinese Sketches Stir Unnecessary Debate

A viral set of colour sketches comparing the typical looks of men from different regions of China has sparked a debate no one asked for.

Especially not for Singaporeans.

The drawings, which claim to represent male faces from China’s Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast, and Xinjiang, exploded across social media this week.

According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), the sketch of the Southeast man had them asking if Singaporean Chinese men are ‘the least attractive’?

Wait, what?

In the sketches, the man representing the Southeast region had a flatter nose and a rounded, slightly protruding jawline.

The others had higher cheekbones, sharp noses, runway model angles. Basically, your C-drama leading actors.

Since many Chinese immigrants who settled in Singapore in the 19th century came from the Southeast region, the conversation quickly shifted.

Once SCMP posted the story online, Singapore netizens stormed the comments and were quick to defend their… looks.

“These are sketches of guys from China. How did Singapore, being a melting pot of different races and identity, get drawn into this debate?” asked one.

Another took a cheeky swipe at Hong Kong’s recent football loss on November 18.

“Still sore that Hong Kong lost to Singapore in football?”

Ouch.

Even some Hong Kongers chimed in to defend Singaporeans.

“As someone who was born in Hong Kong, I see more good-looking guys in Singapore than in Hong Kong”.

Another added, “Hello Hong Kong! Come on, we are from the same genetic pool. PS… Ahem, Singaporeans are more real”.

Well, taste is subjective.

Of course, not everyone disagreed with the article, with one doubling down on a classic insult, “Hasn’t it been well known that Singaporean men are like prawns?”

For the uninitiated, a “prawn” means good body, not-so-good face.
