Umno leaders call out Puchong MP over remark on decision in Najib’s house arrest bid

PETALING JAYA: Several Umno leaders have condemned a social media post by Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin following the High Court’s decision on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s judicial review application, calling her remarks insensitive and disrespectful.

In a Facebook post, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, who is also BN secretary-general, said there was no justification to celebrate the outcome of a court case involving personal suffering.

“Why (the) need to celebrate? Don’t celebrate the suffering of others,” he said in his post, warning against political arrogance.

“Life is a cycle. Remember your leaders are not infallible either,” Zambry added.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, meanwhile, described Yeo’s remarks as deeply inappropriate, noting that she is also DAP’s national publicity secretary.

“The statement is extremely rude and inhumane,” he said, adding that even if one disagreed with the court decision, basic decency should prevail.

“If you are not able to express even a lot of sympathy, do not utter rude and hurtful statements,” he said in his social media post.

Asyraf also suggested it may be time for Umno to reassess its cooperation within the unity government.

“Maybe it’s time for Umno to refine the cooperation established if there are still parties who don’t want to appreciate Umno’s contributions and struggles all these years,” he added.

Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh took a harder line, questioning Umno’s continued support for the unity government.

“What else do we have to wait for? Just withdraw support from this government.

“Let us be a dignified opposition instead of being insulted by these ignorant people,” he said in his social media post.

Meanwhile, Johor PKR Youth chief Faezuddin Puad also said it was inappropriate to celebrate the decision.

“Even though there are differences in opinion, we urge everyone to respect the court’s decision.

“At the same time, it’s important to be mindful of the feelings of friends within our unity,” he said in a Facebook post.
