A woman from Henan, China, has gone viral online for taking a stand against her cheating husband — though not in the way anyone would have expected.
Last year, the woman, Niu Na, discovered her husband was cheating on her with a colleague. According to Niu Na, the affair lasted nearly five years and went beyond emotional betrayal, with her husband using their shared funds to buy luxury-brand gifts for the other woman.
Pained by her husband’s betrayal, she chose to make the matter public, calling out both her husband and his alleged mistress on social media, revealing their names, workplace, and spending logs.
Niu Na’s husband, known by the surname Gao, retaliated. He sued her for defamation… and won.
According to reports, the court ruled that Niu Na’s posts had infringed on her husband’s right to his reputation. Instead of imposing financial damages, however, the judge ordered her to delete the content and issue a public apology that had to remain posted for 15 consecutive days.
That’s when Niu Na began to execute the perfect revenge plan.
She complied with the court order, posting an apology video daily and adhering to what was asked of her. But she did so on her own terms.
She spoke calmly and deliberately, keeping a straight face as she apologised, before exposing details of her husband’s affair. She produced receipts, laid out timelines, and even revealed how she and their daughter struggled financially while he splurged on his mistress.
One of the highlights of her apology videos, delivered with peak sarcasm, came when she said: “The responsibility lies on no one but myself. If I were blind, I was blind to you casting amorous glances [at someone else]. If I were ignorant, I was ignorant to you using our funds to get a smile out of her. If I were mute, I would be mute in tolerating your excuses and the smell of perfume on you when you returned home late.”
She continued: “If a wife feigns ignorance, it allows the husband to spread their wings and soar. I am at fault for ruining your fake reputation as a good husband and a good leader.”
Chinese social media was instantly transfixed with Niu Na’s videos, with each clip garnering millions of views. The legal penalty became a public spectacle, with Niu Na’s 800K new followers tuning in daily for her next “apology”.
The internet rallied behind her, praising the brilliant way in which she chose to hit back at the “unfair judgement”. Some viewers joked that they were monitoring her compliance with the court order, while others reminded her to keep posting for the full 15 days to meet the ruling’s requirements.
The fallout soon reached beyond the internet. Niu Na’s husband worked at a state-owned, publicly listed company, which reportedly saw its share price drop by as much as 22 per cent during the same period — a coincidental timing that raised eyebrows.
Gao was subsequently suspended, with the company launching an investigation into his conduct, seemingly in an effort to contain the damage.
Legally, Niu Na may have lost the case, but she gained the respect of the internet. More importantly, she stood up for herself, challenging the narrative while staying within the law.
