It seems the trend of asking Cantonese-speaking singers to converse in Mandarin at their concerts is not going away.
Unlike Eason Chan who recently showed his displeasure when asked to speak in Mandarin during his concert in Macau, Heavenly King Leon Lai handled a similar request with relative ease.
During his concert in Macau in June, Leon was about to share a story from his childhood when he was rudely interrupted by a few fans demanding he “Speak Mandarin!”. Leon, then good naturedly said “Okay!” before continuing.
Leon later explained that with fans travelling from other places to see him, he will do his best to switch between Mandarin and Cantonese
However, at his recent concert in Hong Kong Leon kept things fresh when met with a similar request.
He said “You can listen to me speak in Cantonese! I have confidence in you!” which drew thunderous applause from the audience.
Netizens praised him for handling the incident well. Some said he gave the “perfect response” and that he “truly is the King of Bon Mots”.
