More opportunities for Malaysian students through closer ties with China, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong is hoping to open up more education opportunities for Malaysian students by forging closer ties with higher education institutions in China.

The MCA president said it would be beneficial to provide students from both countries with more choices and opportunities for education and their further careers.

“With closer relations and cooperation in the field of higher education between Malaysia and China, we will be able to give our young people more choices and opportunities in different fields of education,” he said in a Facebook post on his official account.

The TARC Education Foundation Board of Trustees chairman’s statement comes after he received a courtesy visit from a delegation from Tianjin University, China led by the university’s Party Committee Secretary Yang Xianjin in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 28).

The delegation had already visited several universities across Malaysia, including Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to have discussions and establish cooperation between Malaysian universities and Tianjin University, according to Dr Wee.

He added that Tianjin University, which is known for its polytechnic courses, especially in the field of petroleum chemistry which is of international standard, currently has over 400 Malaysian students pursuing their studies at their university in China.

Dr Wee was joined by Tanjung Piai MP Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng as well as MCA vice-president and Senator Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker in greeting the delegation during their visit.
