Last July, Asian showbiz lost one of its brightest stars, Hong Kong singer Coco Lee. It was not long after her death that a nine-minute voice recording surfaced. On it, Coco claimed she was bullied during her stint as a coach on Chinese reality singing show Sing! China.
Warner Music China, Coco’s agency back then, released a statement saying that they “had the responsibility to ensure that they fight for and protect the rights of their artistes”.
In August, the broadcast of Sing! China was indefinitely halted as investigations regarding Coco’s claims began.
It was later revealed that the company behind Sing! China, Can Xing Media, had filed a lawsuit against Coco’s agency, on the grounds of a “contract dispute”.
Both sides were supposed to meet in the Shanghai court tomorrow (April 9).
Netizens are now calling Can Xing Media “shameless” and “despicable” for going after someone who is already dead.
Many also voiced their unhappiness on Weibo, with one writing: “Are they really not afraid of retribution?”
A few netizens also suggested that Can Xing Media had taken legal action as Warner Music had gone against a confidential clause in their contract by speaking up on Coco’s behalf.
Although specific details of the case were not released to the public, the lawsuit is understood to have been initially filed as a civil case.
However, as Warner Music had filed a jurisdiction objection, the case will be seen as a dispute, and a trial will be held. As such, the April 9 court date is said to have been cancelled.
