Ulu Tiram attack: Beef up security at public places, urges Lee Lem Thye

PETALING JAYA: Following the deadly attack in Ulu Tiram police station by a Jemaah Islamiah-linked attacker, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has called for security in public places to be beefed up.

The Alliance for A Safe Community chairman said that random acts of terrorism can take place anywhere stemming from extremism and radicalisation of groups.

“The despicable incident has proven once again that the nation as a whole must always be on guard against all forms of extremism and radicalism to uphold our harmony and peace and ensure the safety of all.

“It is important to reassure the public that security at all police stations is beefed up. Also, in all places where the public usually congregates, such as airports, train stations, shopping malls, schools, and stadiums,” he said in a statement on Saturday (May 18).

Lee also said that the results of investigations must be disclosed to the public once they have concluded to ensure that people are aware of their roles and to avoid similar incidents in the future.

“Meanwhile, our Special Branch of the Police force needs to beef up its intelligence gathering to address issues of such nature in the future,” Lee said.

He also expressed his condolences to the families of the two policemen who perished at the recent Ulu Tiram police station attack.

“We also extend our prayers for the quick recovery of the policeman who was injured and is now undergoing treatment in hospital,” he added.

In the 2.45am incident on Friday (May 17), two policemen — Konstabel Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Konstabel Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, — were killed while another was injured after they were attacked by a lone wolf assailant at the Ulu Tiram station.

Another policeman, Koperal Mohd Hasif Roslan, was injured and is currently receiving treatment at the Sultan Ismail Hospital.

The 21-year-old masked intruder, believed to be a member of the Jemaah Islamiah, was shot dead at the location.

Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the assailant was acting alone.
