It’s all over for Malaysia in Singapore Open badminton

PETALING JAYA: It was the end of the road for Malaysia’s challenge in the Singapore Open after former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik failed to get the better of Danes Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in their men’s doubles quarter-final clash on Friday (May 31).

Fourth seeded Aaron-Wooi Yik, the last Malaysian pair in the competition, were bundled out after losing 10-21, 14-21 to the fifth seeded Danish pair.

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani could not get past China’s He Jiting-Ren Xiangyu as they lost 16-21, 21-9, 17-21 in an earlier quarter-final match.

World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen proved too strong for national men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao as he ended the Malaysian’s spirited run at the Singapore Open.

The world No. 36 Jun Hao lost in straight sets to Axelsen in 41 minutes, with the Danish player winning 21-12, 21-11.

It has been a good run though for Jun Hao in Singapore as the youngster defeated world No. 7 Anthony Ginting of Indonesia in the second round on Thursday.

Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei also ended their run in Singapore after losing to South Korea’s Seo Seung-jae-Chae Yu-jung 14-21, 18-21 earlier.
