A man took advantage of the girl’s impoverished situation to issue the dangerous challenge.
A 13-year-old Thai girl was hospitalised last weekend after taking on an alcohol dare in exchange for 1000 baht (S$37).
The girl, known as A, was attending an ordination ceremony at a temple in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima.
There, A and her friend, a 13-year-old boy, was posed a challenge from a Thai man: drink half a bottle of alcohol for 1000 baht.
While her friend was left severely inebriated after the challenge, A immediately lost consciousness and was immediately rushed to the hospital.
According to Thai media, as of yesterday (Jun 10), A remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.
A’s 72-year-old grandmother, Aui, has since made a police report against the Thai man.
Aui said that A and her friends would often attend ordination ceremonies at the temple near their home to gather money scattered by monks.
A lives in a one-storey house with 13 family members, some of whom are young children, elderly, and disabled. It’s said she needed the extra cash to help with their living expenses.
A’s relative was able to retrieve a video of the incident, and has handed it to the police as evidence. Reports say that the video showed A and her friend drinking the alcohol while a group of Thai men egged them on.
As of press time, the men have yet to be taken into custody. A police rep, however, has said they know the identity of the main instigator.
The group will be tracked down and called in for questioning. If they are found to be involved with the incident, they will be charged under the country’s Child Protection Act and will face up to three months of prison time, a 30K baht (S$1103) fine, or both.
