QuickCheck: Is sleeping with the fan on dangerous?
THERE are numerous articles online concerning how dangerous it is to sleep with the fan on.
So is it true that sleeping with the fan on is bad for your health?
Verdict:
FALSE
Sleeping with the fan turned on (for ceiling, standing or any other permutation) is not dangerous nor is it detrimental to your health.
An argument could be made that an electric fan could stir up the dust in your room, making your allergies flare up, but that would only be a concern if you have dust allergies to begin with.
Another argument is that the cold air could dry out your nasal passages while you sleep, causing congestion or that it could dry out your skin and eyes, but that would be more a problem for those living in colder, dryer climes.
According to researchers, electric fan angst came about more or less when the technology was in its early days back in the early 20th century, and it seems that it was a predominantly Korean concern.
Wild stories of electric fans causing nausea, asphyxiation, hypothermia and even facial paralysis would occasionally hit the press in the Koreas, from both before and after partition.
However, these concerns were not grounded in any scientific fact and are more or less just an urban myth that has stubbornly persisted over the years.
