MetMalaysia: Be careful of thunderstorms during inter-monsoon to kick in from Tuesday

PETALING JAYA: The inter-monsoon is expected to kick in beginning Tuesday (Sept 24) and will last until early November.

The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the start of the inter-monsoon marks the end of the southwest monsoon, which has been in place since May 17.

“During the inter-monsoon period, the country will experience weak winds blowing from various directions.

“This situation may encourage the occurrence of thunderstorms, often accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds over a short period, especially in the late afternoons and early evenings in most parts of the west coast and interior of the Peninsula Malaysia, western Sabah, and western and central Sarawak.

“Such weather conditions have the potential to cause flash floods, falling trees, and damage to unstable structures,” it said in a statement on Friday (Sept 18).

Members of public, said the department, are advised to be more vigilant during this period and to always stay updated with weather forecasts and warnings issued through the official website, the myCuaca mobile app, and MetMalaysia’s official social media channels.

The public can also contact the department’s hotline at 1-300-22-1638 for any further inquiries.
