Former Singaporean actor fined RM10,000 over traffic accident, cyclist suffered fractured right elbow

Retired Singaporean actor-director Ng Aik Leong failed to exercise care while driving a van out of a slip road, and it struck a bicycle, causing its rider to suffer injuries including a fractured right elbow.

Better known as Huang Yiliang, Ng, 63, was fined S$3,000 (RM9,996) on Nov 15 after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to the 27-year-old cyclist while driving a vehicle without reasonable consideration for other road users.

Ng, who is now a director at plumbing company Hyl Enterprise, was also disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for five years.

He was driving the van along a Cavenagh Road slip road onto Bukit Timah Road at around 8.20pm on Sept 20, 2023, when the vehicle hit the victim, who had the right of way while cycling along Bukit Timah Road from Ng’s right to left.

The cyclist went to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and was given seven days of hospitalisation leave.

He later went to an orthopaedic clinic and was given 50 days of hospitalisation leave.

For causing grievous hurt to another person while driving a vehicle without reasonable consideration for other road users, a first-time offender can be jailed for up to two years and fined up to S$5,000.

A repeat offender can be jailed for up to four years and fined up to S$10,000.

This incident was not Ng’s first brush with the law.

In 2012, he was fined S$3,000 for assaulting a woman for failing to clean up after her dog. He had grabbed her by her neck and held her down while continuing to taunt her.

In an unrelated case, he was sentenced to 10 months’ jail in February 2021 for assaulting a Bangladeshi worker in 2018.

Ng had used a metal scraper to hit the worker, Jahidul, twice in the abdomen and once on the head at the Singapore Islamic Hub in Braddell Road at around 4.30pm on Dec 11 that year.

As a result, Jahidul, then 35, who goes by only one name, suffered injuries to his scalp and torso. Ng was also ordered to pay the victim S$3,300 in compensation.

Ng was an actor for more than 20 years and was named Best Supporting Actor at the annual Star Awards three times – in 2002, 2003 and 2006.

He left local broadcaster Mediacorp in 2008. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
