HK actress Tavia Yeung opens up about rumours of being ‘blacklisted’ by TVB
Tavia Yeung returned to TVB after a six-year hiatus with the hit drama Darkside Of The Moon.
The 45-year-old actress, who last appeared in the 2018 series Another Era, has spent the past eight years focusing on family and re-evaluating her career.
Yeung began her journey with TVB in 1999, dedicating 17 years to the station going from a supporting actress to the winner of the Best Actress award at 2012’s TVB Awards Ceremony for her role as Hong Tsz-kwan in Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles.
Yet, she doesn’t consider this achievement the turning point in her career.
“For many, awards signify a breakthrough, but for me, it was playing a role in Beyond The Realm Of Conscience that changed everything,” Yeung said in an interview with hk01.
“It allowed me to break away from typecasting. I realised I couldn’t play the sweet, innocent girl forever. That role gave me the confidence to explore deeper, more complex characters.”
With this newfound view, Yeung made the bold decision to leave TVB in 2016.
While TVB provided a sense of security, Yeung admitted she craved the freedom to explore her potential.
“I felt it was time to step out because one became akin to a frog in a well after too long a time at TVB,” she said referring to a Chinese idiom about someone with limited vision or perspective.
“The stability of a steady job and repeating the same tasks every day left little room for growth or breakthroughs.
“It happened at a point where I felt ready to move into a new phase of life – planning my wedding, starting a family, and taking another shot in the entertainment industry to see where it could lead.”
Addressing the long-standing rumours that she had been “blacklisted” by TVB during her departure, Yeung dismissed them immediately.
“That never happened, to be honest … My contract had simply ended. And that gave me the chance to reflect on my priorities, plan my life, take a break, and spend quality time with my family.”
After leaving TVB, Yeung got married to Him Law, her co-star from The Hippocratic Crush.
Reflecting on their relationship, Yeung describes their love story as quiet and grounded.
Now parents to two children, the couple values a calm and steady partnership, with Law often likening their love to “a gentle, flowing river.”
“There’s nothing overly dramatic about us,” said Yeung. “And these days, even less so. He always says, ‘We don’t need to do anything special; a steady flow is enough.’ I tease him, though, saying, ‘If you don’t watch out, I’m about to turn off your tap!’”
Still, she admits she hopes to add more spark to their routine.
“A steady river doesn’t have to be dull. You need to sprinkle in some colour, right? If it gets too bland, that’s not ideal either,” she said with a laugh.
It seems Yeung has found balance both on and off the screen after stepping out of her comfort zone.
