Trader jailed 10 years for beating pregnant wife in Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: A trader has been jailed 10 years by the Sessions Court here for causing serious injury to his third ex-wife, Jahidah Nordin @ Sylvester and leaving her in a coma three years ago.

Judge Fatimah Zahari handed down the sentence, effective from the conviction on Monday (Dec 9), after the defence failed to raise any reasonable doubt.

The court also rejected the application by Rosmaini Abdul Raof, 41, to postpone the execution of his sentence, finding no special circumstances to warrant granting the request.

On Jan 17, the same court ordered Rosmaini to defend himself after the prosecution successfully established a prima facie case.

According to the charge sheet, he intentionally caused serious injuries to Jahidah, who was expecting their first child then, by stomping on her and hitting her on the head, face and hands.

The accused had committed the offence at around 6am on May 4, 2021 in a flat at Kampung Aman in Larkin here.

The accused was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine, while Section 326A carries a sentence of twice the maximum term of imprisonment for the offence.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Fatimah Mamu led the prosecution, while the defence team comprised lawyers Kamal Hisham Ja’afar, Mohd Salleh, and Aina Kamilah Zalizan.

Also present at the proceedings were observing lawyers Syufri A Samad and Muhammad Hazeem Mohd Norizan, along with the victim’s sister, Fauziah Nordin, 43, who also appeared to deliver a victim impact statement.
