S’wak keen on global partnerships in its bid to become a clean energy leader

KUCHING: Sarawak is reaffirming its position as South-East Asia’s clean energy leader with a commitment to clear policies and international cooperation, says the state’s Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister.

Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said Sarawak also invested in innovation as part of its energy transition plans.

“Sarawak is proud to be a pioneer in Asean when it comes to clean energy development,” he said in his keynote address at the Energy Export Conference (EEC) in Aberdeen, Scotland, on Thursday (June 5).

“Our participation at EEC 2025 reflects our readiness to forge new global partnerships and export low-carbon energy solutions to the world.”

Dr Hazland said Sarawak’s integrated strategy was built on four hubs – renewable energy, natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen.

With over 70% of the state’s electricity now generated from hydropower, he said Sarawak was on track to expand its renewable energy capacity by 2035.

“We are also advancing regional power exports to West Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah and soon to Singapore, cementing our role as the ‘Battery of Asean’,” he said.

He added that Sarawak was pioneering hydrogen development with flagship projects and dedicated legislation to attract global investors.

Deputy State Secretary Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel said EEC was an important platform for building resilient energy ecosystems.

“Our presence in Aberdeen is a statement of intent. Sarawak is open for business, open for innovation and ready to lead in clean energy exports,” he said.
