Over 80,000 benefit from Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 90% of housing loans approved under the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme have gone to Malaysians aged 40 and below, says Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu
The Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister said more than 80,000 young borrowers had benefited from the scheme since its introduction in 2008.
“The scheme has approved financing for 90,779 individuals, amounting to RM21.5bil to date.
“Of all applications received, 89.56% were from youths aged 40 and below,” she told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Oct 13).
She stated that, by age group, there were over 15,000 borrowers aged 18 to 25, more than 31,000 aged 26 to 30, approximately 22,000 aged 31 to 35, and over 12,000 aged 36 to 40.
Aiman Athirah was responding to Azli Yusof (PH-Shah Alam), who asked about measures to help young Malaysians who are self-employed or working in the gig economy to obtain housing loans.
She said the recently tabled Budget 2026 has earmarked an additional RM20bil in guarantees for the scheme, including RM1bil specifically for contract-based civil servants.
“This is indeed good news,” she said.
On a question about mechanisms to boost the purchase of Bumiputera housing lots, Aiman Athirah said data showed a positive trend in ownership.
Citing the National Property Information Centre (Napic), she said Bumiputera residential property ownership transfer transactions in 2023 totalled 117,190, compared with 121,991 in 2022.
“The total transaction value in 2023 was RM34.49bil, compared with RM34.69bil in 2022.
“This indicates sustained participation among Bumiputeras in the property market,” she said.
