Bank Islam GCEO Mohd Muazzam steps down

PETALING JAYA: Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd’s group chief executive officer (GEO) Datuk Mohd Muazzam Mohamed has tendered his resignation after 10 years of service, seven of which were at the helm of the group.

In a statement, the bank said his resignation will take effect on Jan 7, 2026, while his last day of service will be on Dec 12, 2025.

According to the bank, the board has commenced a formal search process to identify a suitable successor who will lead the group into its next phase of growth.

“A new GCEO will be announced once regulatory approvals have been obtained,” it noted.

In the interim period, Bank Islam group chief business officer of retail banking Mizan Masram will assume the role of the group’s officer-in-charge on Dec 13, 2025Mohd Muazzam will serve out his notice and support Mizan during the transition period.

During his tenure, Mohd Muazzam made significant contributions to the bank in terms of digital transformation by integrating technology with Islamic finance principles.

“He led the digital transformation strategy of the group, as it embarked on e-payments initiatives and launched Be U, the country’s first cloud-native mobile banking application,” the bank said. 

He also oversaw a major group restructuring in October 2021 where Bank Islam assumed the listing status from its parent group to be the only standalone Islamic bank listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia.

The group has demonstrated a strong capital position and financial resilience, having grown its total asset size to RM100bil this year from RM64bil in 2018.

Bank Islam chairman Tan Sri Dr Ismail Haji Bakar said Mohd Muazzam, who was leaving the group to pursue personal interests, has been instrumental in shaping Bank Islam into a strong and resilient institution.
