Annuar Musa Says Dr Mahathir’s Idea is ‘Hypocritical’ & Wants M’sians to Vote for Their New Govt Again
Umno, PAS, MCA, MIC and PBRS want parliament to be dissolved and have agreed that Malaysians should vote for the new government.
According to The Star, Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the five parties have unanimously agreed that the best solution in the country’s current political situation would be to let the people choose their new government.
This comes after the parties disagreed with interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who proposed to form a unity government.
“After our parties met and discussed, we agreed to make a clear stance on this,” he said at a press conference at the Umno headquarters yesterday (25th February).
“We ask that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong allow for Parliament to be dissolved, to pave way for fresh polls. Let the people choose their new government.” he told a press conference at the Umno headquarters here yesterday.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan and PBRS deputy president Arthur Kurup were also present at the press conference.
Annuar said that during their interview with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara yesterday, the MPs of the five parties expressed their views on what should be done next.
On Sunday (23rd February), he said the parties agreed to form a coalition government headed by Dr Mahathir on condition that DAP is not part of it.
“The leaders of our parties signed a statutory declaration on this and gave it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong when we had an audience with the King on Sunday,” he said, adding that things changed when Dr Mahathir resigned and was reappointed as interim Prime Minister.
“Before our audience with the King, our party leaders had a meeting with the Prime Minister. He discussed with us the possibility of a unity government.”
“He explained that the government will be formed and the Prime Minister will choose individuals, not parties, to be a part of it.”
“In principle, it goes against our party’s stance. Therefore, we came to a decision to support only the dissolution of Parliament for fresh polls to be held.”
Annuar then labelled Dr Mahathir’s idea as “hypocritical”.
“Even with four parties, their government collapsed. And the same person is going to lead more parties? There will be a bigger collapse,” he said.
“We do not want the people to be cheated twice.”
PAS secretary-general, Takiyuddin said the new coalition, Perikatan Nasional, that the Opposition parties planned to form had obtained the support of 130 MPs. However, their plan failed when Dr Mahathir resigned.
“So now, we feel the best option is to dissolve Parliament. Give back the mandate to the people and let the people choose their government,” he said.
Meanwhile, MCA president Dr Wee said that this political crisis was a “self-inflicted destruction” among Pakatan Harapan partners.
“It was their own doing and mistakes that have caused its collapse,” he said.
“The fairest and best way forward is for Parliament to be dissolved, and fresh elections to be called. This is what we have presented to the King.”
Should Malaysians choose the new government again like we did in GE14? Or should we trust Dr Mahathir and our Agong to make the best decision for this country?
