Berjaya Tioman Resort Cease Operations After 50 Years

Many hotels in Malaysia have not been able to survive the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic. The latest on the list this week is Berjaya Tioman Resort.

In an announcement last night, the chain at Pulau Tioman in Pahang released a statement informing patrons that it will officially close down on 15th June 2020 (next Monday).

The four-star resort’s statement reads:

Throughout this closure, the management will embark on a much-needed major redevelopment to revitalise the resort which is more than 50 years old. Our hearts go out to those who are affected by this closure.

It is with deep regret that retrenchment will be carried out and all affected employees will be fairly compensated in accordance with the Collective Agreement and the Employment Act, amounting to a compensation of more than RM8 million.”

So sad to hear this. We had the best time when me and my husband celebrated our anniversary here. Wishing all the luck to the staff and management I hope we will see the resort in all it glory yet again in the near future. Thank you for your service!” Facebook user Ronniez Page wrote.

Truly sad…was supposed to go there for my family vacation last March. My kids were so disappointed when we had to ultimately cancel the room and our trip due to the pandemic and MCO,” Syahidatul Rizan Abdul Rashid chimed in.
