Daniel Cormier Says He Will Only Fight Jake Paul Under MMA Rules
Daniel Cormier has finally responded to Jake Paul’s offer for a boxing match.
Following his win over former UFC fighter Ben Askren, the YouTuber has set his sights on 42-year-old Cormier and has talked a lot of game.
The pair had a war of words at UFC 261 and now Cormier wants to set the record straight.
The retired professional mixed martial artist and amateur wrestler doesn’t want to step into a ring with Paul. He wants an octagon.
Speaking on the DC & Helwani show, the former heavyweight champion said: “I don’t want to fight Jake Paul. But I’m not gonna let Jake Paul disrespect me. Let me tell you one thing about Jake Paul and I’ll refer back to the Conor McGregor deal.
“Conor went to fight Floyd, made a ton of money, because he had to. Floyd Mayweather is the greatest boxer of all time, so you go play on his playing field. Why would I go and box Jake Paul?”
He said he isn’t going to ‘chase a payday’ because he used to be a champion in his weight class.
But that doesn’t mean he’s shying away from a potential showdown with Paul.
Cormier continued: “This kid wants to fight, OK, I’ll fight him. But it will be a mixed martial arts competition. If he wants to actually fight with me, fight me in mixed martial arts and then I’ll fight him all the way down at 205(lbs).
“I’m living fat and happy and healthy, I’ll go all the way down to 205 to fight this kid in mixed martial arts. If you really want to fight me, like seriously fight me, fight me in mixed martial arts.
“This is not going to be fun. I’m telling you right now, at 42 years old, bad back and everything, I’m going to torture him and I’m going to hurt him. I don’t want to box him, I don’t want to fight in a limited skill set of rules.
“If you want to fight me, you really want to fight me, fight me in a mixed martial arts competition. I’ll go all the way back to 205 and I’m going to smash him and I’m going to hurt him and then he can go back to fighting these YouTube kids.”
In a threatening message to Paul, he promised he would ‘rip his face apart’ if he ever stepped into the octagon with the YouTuber-cum-boxer.
He wanted to send a message to ‘these kids’ not to challenge athletes.
Last week, Paul told the IMPAULSIVE podcast that he would happily take on Cormier as his next opponent.
“‘Daniel Cormier, I’ll beat the f**k out of your fat a** too, just like Stipe did. I swear to god, I’ll beat the f**k out of Daniel Cormier,” the YouTuber said.
