“Squid Game’s” Lee Jung Jae Appears on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”
After starring in Netflix’s Squid Games, South Korean actor Lee Jung Jae shot to international fame and was invited as a guest to American talk show, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Accompanied by a translator, the actor introduced himself and shared his thoughts on the success of the hit series.
The actor revealed that he could have never have imagined the series’ overwhelming popularity and spoke humbly, “When I first read the script, I didn’t think it would achieve its popularity to this extent. I thought the show would be good, but I never thought that I would get a chance to meet you here.”
While some audiences were disturbed by the violence in the series, Lee Jung Jae accepted the critique, “It’s a good criticism. I think a lot of the people who really related to Squid Game and really loved it. They also experienced some kind of hurt because of economic troubles or violence. I think the reason they were able to relate to the story was the key to the success of the show.”
The actor added, “The violence that is depicted in the show is about wanting to retrieve back the humanity that we lost in today’s extremely competitive society. So, I think when we compare to what’s happening in the real and violent society that we live in, it’s not as cruel.”
Stephen pointed out that while Lee Jung Jae already had a well-established acting career in South Korea, many Americans only came to know him recently through Squid Games. When Stephen teased that Leonardo DiCaprio and many other Hollywood stars wanted to take a picture with Lee Jung Jae, the actor replied, “Leonardo said he watched Squid Games and he gave me praises. It was unbelievable!”
