PETALING JAYA: The unity government is reneging on its promises of reform by arresting and charging Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor with sedition, says Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said that it appears that the unity government is using legal instruments to pressure its political opponents.

“This is clearly against the reformasi promises that were championed by them, which includes abolishing the Sedition Act,” said Muhyiddin in a statement on Wednesday (July 19).

Muhyiddin also said he sympathises with Sanusi for being charged with sedition.

“I want to stress that Perikatan’s main principles and policies are to uphold the sovereignty and nobility of the Malay Rulers as constitutional monarchs,” said Muhyiddin.

“I also pray that my friend Muhammad Sanusi will get justice in court. I invite everyone to pray together for his safety and remain calm,” he added.

Muhammad Sanusi is currently facing two charges under the Sedition Act 1948 over a political speech on July 11.

There were criticisms over the arrest of Muhammad Sanusi at 3am on July 18.

However, the police have explained that the arrest was because Muhammad Sanusi did not answer multiple phone calls by the police.
