Maxis customers could be getting 5G access as early as next month

PETALING JAYA: The 5G dual network task force has successfully reached an agreement with telcos on the equity participation in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and the 5G access agreement.

The telcos include CelcomDigi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, U Mobile, and YTL Communications, which will be finalising their shareholding in DNB.

Participating telcos will also be supporting the development of the 5G network by DNB until it achieves 80% coverage of populated areas (COPA) by the end of 2023.

The dual network task force was originally formed earlier in May, with the goal of ensuring that 5G COPA reaches 80% coverage by the end of 2023 in order to facilitate a smoother transition to a dual network model in early 2024.

Service providers will have to take the necessary actions in order to complete this process.

As of June 30, DNB has developed 5G network infrastructure covering 64.7% of COPA and is on track to achieve the set target.

Following previous commitments, Maxis has started the signing process of the 5G access agreement with DNB after a number of related issues were finalised on July 11.

Maxis customers will receive access to the 5G network pending the telco’s approval as a shareholder during an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) next month.

Meanwhile, CelcomDigi, Telekom Malaysia, U Mobile and YTL Communications have offered 5G services since last year.
