QuickCheck: Did a Nigerian man experience blindness after crying non-stop for seven days?

CRYING often connects people, whether it’s out of grief, love, or another strong emotion. Many have gone through such emotions involuntarily, but was there a man who voluntarily cried for a week continuously, going into temporary blindness?

Verdict:

TRUE

A Nigerian man went temporarily blind after forcing himself to cry non-stop for seven days in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record, BBC reports.

Tembu Ebere went temporarily blind during the challenge for about 45 minutes and suffered from a headache, puffed eyes, and a swollen face.

The self-proclaimed social media comedian said he had to re-strategise and reduce his wailing and was determined to cry for one week as he planned despite the difficulties encountered.

He said his stunt would not be legitimate and that he had not submitted an application to the Guinness World Record. Following this, research on whether or not excessive and continuous crying may lead to temporary blindness is still scarce.

However crying can bring both negative and positive implications to an individual’s health. When a person cries, this is a sign that he or she may be in a state of emotional stress and pain.

A research published in the National Library of Medicine indicated that stress leads to vision loss, which in turn causes additional stress.

Mayo Clinic explains how stress is most likely to cause headaches, which was what Ebere experienced during his act.
