State polls: Juwairiya ready to take on Azmin in Hulu Kelang
GOMBAK: Although anticipating a tough fight, Pakatan Harapan’s Hulu Kelang candidate Juwairiya Zulkifli is all set to take on her former boss Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
Asked if she was worried that she would be facing a heavyweight, the deputy Wanita PKR chief said she did not fear her opponent.
She added that Azmin was not a stranger to her or her team.
“He is not a stranger to us, he was our former deputy president (in PKR). He is a former boss of mine. I worked with him in 2010,” she said after her nomination for the Hulu Kelang seat at SMK Sungai Pusu here on Saturday (July 29).
“We know each other’s track record. This (contesting the seat) is a mandate from the party. My focus is on the people and the voters. So we are not worried because our purpose is to win the hearts of the people,” she added.
The political secretary of caretaker Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said she does not see her move from Bukit Melawati to Hulu Kelang as a disadvantage.
Juiwariya was the former assemblyman for Bukit Melawati.
She said her move to a new constituency reflects the party and the president’s confidence in her capabilities.
She, however, admitted that it would be a tough fight with the possibility of a victory with a slim majority as Azmin himself was a former state assemblyman in Hulu Kelang and Member of Parliament in Gombak.
Despite an earlier denial, Azmin will be contesting in familiar ground after 24 years by competing in Hulu Kelang – where he made his election debut in 1999.
The Selangor Perikatan Nasional chief had also served as the state’s Mentri Besar.
