KL OCPDs must be more hands on, city’s top cop says

KUALA LUMPUR: All OCPDs in Kuala Lumpur must go to the ground and be more hands on, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

The KL police chief said he wants all OCPDs in the Federal Territory to be on the ground with their officers and personnel.

“I want all my OCPDs to be hands on, not merely issuing orders. All officers and personnel must implement the vision and mission of the IGP and Deputy IGP, which prioritises integrity, good governance and best service for the people,” he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said this in his speech after witnessing a handing-over ceremony at the state police headquarters on Monday (Aug 7).

Senior Asst Comm Habibi Majinji handed over the post of Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief to Deputy Comm Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob.

SAC Habibi had previously held the post in an acting capacity.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said many aspects must be improved upon to better serve the public.

“After three months leading the police contingent, there are still certain officers and personnel who refuse to change for the better. We are always in the public eye, thus we cannot afford to fail in our duties.

“If the Kuala Lumpur police fail, it will reflect poorly on the rest of the police force. However, I am heartened to note that there are those with the will to change at the operational level,” he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the IGP announced last week that officers who live beyond their means will be identified.

“I will not compromise in taking action against those who are involved in wrongdoings and in matters of integrity,” he said.

Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily then said that change was a natural thing and something one cannot run away from.

“We must work together to achieve success.

“I am confident that success can be achieved if all of us embrace the spirit of change,” he added. Those in leadership positions will always be forced to make unpopular decisions, he said.

“If you want to be popular, this is not the profession for you. Every decision must be made after considering all aspects,” he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily also welcomed DCP Azry to the KL police force.

“You must hit the ground running. For the past two years, you had a different job scope. In KL, you will be facing various challenges as the demand of the job is high,” he said.
