Malaysian ehailing coalition lauds PM’s extra push for upskilling riders

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian E-hailing Coalition (Gabungan E-hailing Malaysia) has thrown its support behind the government’s plan to push for the further upskilling and training for food and parcel delivery (p-hailing) riders.

This comes after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that more resources would be allocated for the upskilling of p-hailing riders after a meeting with 24 p-hailing operators on Aug 8.

“This initiative will not only benefit the industry as a whole but also provide more opportunities for young riders who are interested in returning to the formal (work) sector.

“This commitment proves that the government is sensitive and cares about the interests of all parties in increasing the people’s income generation,” it said in a statement on Friday (Aug 11).

However, the association also called on the government to outline new policies or laws to ensure the transparent and fair calculation of wages for riders.

“The best solution would be to have a clear and properly enforced policy or law on this issue; by announcing the setting of fares for ehailing and p-hailing services.

“The setting of such fares must then be clear and transparent for everyone involved, namely for the drivers, shippers, users, vendors, merchants and all other parties involved.

“The government must ensure that every service or job that is carried out is paid fairly and reasonably,” it said.

It added that the government should adopt a new approach in dealing with issues in the new economic sectors such as the gig economy.
