Johor Bomba still working to contain leak at chemical plant

PASIR GUDANG: An operation to contain a chemical leak at Idemitsu (M) Sdn Bhd plant at PLO 408, Jalan Pekeliling near here is still ongoing.

The Johor Fire Rescue Department operation centre received an emergency call regarding the incident at 5.21pm on Wednesday (Aug 23).

Pasir Gudang fire station chief Sarhan Akmal Mohamad said 14 firemen were deployed to the scene with a Light Fire Rapid Tender (LFRT) vehicle, a sports utility vehicle and a hazardous materials (hazmat) engine.

“Our firemen are assisted by the hazmat team from Larkin fire station,” he said in a statement.

Sarhan Akmal said initial investigations found a leaking valve for a styrene monomer storage tank.

Styrene monomer is used in the production of plastic and synthetic rubber products with key applications in the electronics, healthcare, household, automotive, construction and packaging sectors.

He said the company’s emergency response team (ERT) in a call made to the operation centre that they needed a hazmat team to help to close the valve.

“Our hazmat team is now at the scene,” said Sarhan Akmal.

He advised the public not to make speculation which could cause anxiety to Pasir Gudang residents and threaten public order.
