Wakin Chau, Joker Xue Want Out Of Sing! China; Nicholas Tse Only Celeb Mentor Producers Could Not Control

The Sing! China scandal just keeps growing.

Earlier this week, Zhejiang Television announced that they have suspended Chinese music competition Sing! China temporarily to investigate the bullying saga involving late Hong Kong singer Coco Lee.

According to new reports, another reason the show is on hiatus is because two of its current celebrity mentor — Joker Xue, 40, & Wakin Chau, 62 — have insisted on leaving the show after the bullying scandal. The other two mentors for this season are Wilber Pan and Henry Lau.

It’s said that Joker and Wakin are not willing to be on the show regardless of how much money they are being offered.

Netizens also realised that Joker has had relatively little screen time. A surprise given how the singer’s witty bon mots and hilarious reactions often make for good TV.

This led to speculations that he had fallen out with the Sing! China producers after he revealed under-the-table secrets of the competition during the show.

In one episode, Joker asked a contestant: “Do you know what we were doing? We were discussing who should turn [their chairs].”

According to a netizen who was in the audience, Joker had also saved a contestant from elimination. However, when the episode aired, the contestant was still booted out.

Nicholas Tse on Sing! China

According to a source who has worked on the show for the past three seasons, the only celebrity mentor who wasn’t at the mercy of the production team was Nicolas Tse.

“From what I understood and heard, only Nicholas Tse was truthful and had his own principles,” said the source

Not only did the Hong Kong star reject bribes from contestants to not eliminate them, the show’s all-powerful producers also couldn’t make him do their bidding.

Despite that, Nicholas, who was a mentor in 2018 and 2020, is regularly asked to return to the show because he brings in the ratings.

Nicholas, however, declined the invitations because he is just too busy.

And good for him.
