Indonesian couple fails to flee JPJ roadblock in Melaka

MELAKA: Two motorists caused a stir during a Transport Department’s (JPJ) special operation on motorcycles along the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin Highway at Bertam Malim here on Wednesday night (Sept 13).

In the first case, an Indonesian motorcyclist attempted to flee the roadblock mounted by JPJ on both sides of the road but enforcement officers managed to intercept him and his girlfriend who was riding pillion.

The duo, in their 20s, had tried to speed off the roadblock by tailgating a car to dodge the officers but were blocked by the officers when they reached the checkpoint.

The two claimed that they were on their way back from dinner and the male rider of the motorcycle had no valid driving licence when was asked to produce one by the officers.

The woman on the other hand claimed she owned the motorcycle and let her boyfriend ride the machine.

However, upon check, the enforcement officers discovered her name wasn’t listed as the owner before confiscating the motorcycle and referring the couple to the Melaka Immigration Department.

In the second case, an Indonesian woman who was believed to have panicked upon seeing the roadblock caused an accident while JPJ senior enforcement director Datuk Lokman Jamaan was present at the operation.

The woman’s car swerved from the opposite side of the road before ramming into another car waiting to cross the roadblock.

Fortunately, the woman’s six-year-old son who was with her at that time was unhurt in the accident while a female driver of the other car, also escaped unscathed.

The woman who is married to a local claimed she panicked on seeing the roadblock before accelerating and landing on the opposite side of the road.

Meanwhile, Lokman also ordered his officers to issue a summons to a nurse who was found riding her motorcycle without a road tax and insurance coverage.

The nurse told Lokman that she was returning home after completing her night shift at a hospital here.
