Look to history to move forward, says Dr Mahathir on Malaysia Day

PETALING JAYA: On the 60th Malaysia Day, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says it is important to look back to history if the nation is to move forward.

He said in a social media post on Saturday (Sept 16) that six decades of nationhood is a long time and added that there are many bitter-sweet memories from this period.

“We need to look back at history if we want to move forward. The original reason for the formation of Malaysia is to ensure that the influence of communism does not spread in Peninsula Malaysia, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

“Although Singapore is no longer with us, we have successfully restricted communism,” added Dr Mahathir.

He said with Sabah and Sarawak in the coalition, the effort towards an independent nation has also been fulfilled, adding that Malaysia has benefited in terms of economic growth and development because of this.

“There are times where there is some discomfort. This is normal when it comes to uniting different regions,” he said.

As long as the leaders and thinkers are convinced that unity is important, Dr Mahathir said the coalition will remain strong.

He said Malaysia Day must be celebrated by knowing the history of the formation of Malaysia.

“We celebrate Malaysia Day with that spirit. That is the basis for our unity. We unite in diversity and there is diversity in our union,” he said.
