HK-based Malaysian singer Gin Lee suffered depression after music contract ended

Hong Kong-based Malaysian singer Gin Lee revealed she struggled with mental health issue after her music contract ended. She was previously signed with Universal Music.

Lee, 36, said for half a year, she locked herself at home as she felt depressed.

“At the time, I had this inexplicable fear and anxiety. I wasn’t signed by any labels, didn’t have work, and therefore, didn’t have any income,” Lee told Hong Kong media, adding that she found difficulties supporting herself.

“I didn’t go out during that time because I didn’t want to have to spend money. I ate whatever I could find at home.

“Sometimes, my friend would pretend to come visit me, but their true intent was to bring me food,” she added.

When asked if she sought professional help for her mental health problem, Lee said no.

“I didn’t have any money. I didn’t even have the courage to leave my house. Physically, I felt drained and without energy. I wasn’t diagnosed, so I don’t really know what kind of emotional disorder I had,” she said.

Luckily for the Johor-born singer, she has found a new home for her music career.

Lee signed with Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) in January this year and has released several singles – Dum Dum and Trivial Matters Of Us.

“Everyone at my company has high hopes for me. They worked really hard to organise everything for me. I’m also trying my best so I can achieve results to thank them. I haven’t stopped working all year,” Lee said of the turn of events.
