Rohingya teen among suspects nabbed for alleged rape of underage girl in Melaka
MELAKA: A 14-year-old Rohingya is among two suspects that have been arrested over the alleged rape of an underage girl here, says Melaka police.
State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zainol Samah said the other suspect is a 27-year-old man, also a Rohingya, and the arrests were made following a police report lodged by the victim’s brother at Batang Tiga police station here on Sept 15.
The victim, he said, is a 15-year-old student of a secondary school here.
“The report was lodged by the victim’s 22-year-old brother alleging his sister had been raped after going missing from home at 2pm on Sept 14.
“A medical examination by Melaka Hospital also confirmed a fresh tear in the victim’s hymen,” he said on Wednesday (Sept 20).
DCP Zainol said a preliminary investigation showed the victim had first befriended the younger suspect through WhatsApp on Sept 13.
He said the teenage suspect invited the victim and then brought the victim on a motorcycle to meet the elder suspect at a restaurant in Klebang here on Sept 14.
“The two then took the victim to a nearby beach in a car driven by the elder suspect before the alleged rape took place.
“The victim was later driven to a playground in Batu Berendam here on the same day (Sept 14) before she was abandoned there,” he said.
DCP Zainol said the victim was found at about 2am on Sept 15 while wandering in the playground by her brother’s friends who helped to search for her before the police report was lodged.
He said the teenage suspect doesn’t attend school while the other is self-employed.
DCP Zainol added that the two suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape, which carries up to 20 years imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
It is learnt that the two suspects are United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) card holders.
