JPJ to conduct special ops on commercial vehicle overloading

PETALING JAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is stepping up efforts to curb commercial vehicle overloading after two motorcyclists were killed in a Putrajaya lorry accident on Wednesday (Sept 20).

JPJ deputy director general (planning/operations) Aedy Fadly Ramli said they have instructed all of its state directors to conduct special operations on commercial vehicles.

“These operations will begin next week nationwide and the state directors will be in charge of our enforcement efforts in each state,” he said.

“We at the JPJ Headquarters will also be monitoring these operations in order to compile a report for our top brass and the Transport Minister,” added Aedy Fadly at the Kesas Toll Plaza on Friday (Sept 22).

He said they would also involve other agencies such as the police, Environment Department and the National Anti Drug Agency in these operations.

On Wednesday, two male motorcyclists aged 25 and 39 were killed and several others injured after a lorry collided with multiple vehicles in Jalan Persiaran Utara near Putrajaya here.

Putrajaya OCPD Asst Comm A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said that the accident occurred at about 10.14am on Wednesday when the two victims and 11 others stopped their vehicles to make way for a traffic police convoy assigned to Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) escort duty.

Further checks revealed that six other victims who were injured were sent to Hospital Serdang and Hospital Putrajaya for treatment.
