Teachers among top victims of online scammers in Johor, says state police chief

JOHOR BARU: Teachers are among the top victims who fall for scammers, says Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat (pic).

The Johor police chief said that in Johor, 117 cases of teachers getting scammed have been reported as of September this year.

“This involves losses of more than RM4.24mil. In terms of value, it is higher compared to the value of RM3.41mil recorded in the same period last year.

“There was an increase of RM830,844,” he said in a press conference after attending the Threat of Scammers in Current Times townhall session with teachers at Bank Simpanan Nasional here on Tuesday (Oct 3).

He said that scammers usually do not target a certain group of people as they pick their potential victims at random.

“However, with more than 50,000, Johor has a large number of teachers, so the probability of the scammers preying on teachers is higher.

“From our investigations, most of the cases happen through the mobile phone either via calls or messaging.

“This is why we are prioritising on education. To inform the public, especially teachers of the risks, prevention and ways of identifying scam calls,” he added.
