Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao Hsien, who announced his retirement from filmmaking last week due to his battle with Alzheimer’s disease, was recently spotted on the streets of Taipei.
Dressed in a grey tee and printed shorts and sporting a head of grey hair, the 76-year-old auteur was photographed sipping on a drink looking relaxed on his walk.
According to insiders, Hsiao Hsien exercises regularly, often going for brisk walks at the park near his home in the afternoon.
Hsiao Hsien’s family issued a statement last week confirming his condition and stating that Shulan River, his new film starring Shu Qi and Chang Chen, would no longer move forward.
They hope the public will give him the space to rest.
Best known for masterpieces like A City Of Sadness and The Flowers of Shanghai, Hsiao Hsien is widely regarded as the greatest living Taiwanese filmmaker.
Despite battling Alzheimer’s, Hsiao Hsien continued to work on his new film.
He was forced to stop when he suffered the side effects of Covid-19 and according to the family, the turn of events was not something they expected.
Hsiao Hsien’s son said the director has fully returned to family life and is now resting.
There are no major issues in his physical and mental state.
