Send old, broken gadgets to MCMC e-waste centres, says Deputy Communications and Digital Minister

CYBERJAYA: The public can send old or broken gadgets to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) e-waste collection centres to recycle or dispose of properly, says the Deputy Communications and Digital Minister.

With an estimated 364 million e-waste produced annually in this country, Teo Nie Ching (pic) said the Communications and Digital Ministry, through MCMC, encourages using the Kitar programme, which collects and recycles old gadgets.

“Don’t just throw them into the trash bin because there is a way for us to recycle,” she said after officiating the Carbon Footprint En Route to Nature programme on Saturday (Nov 11).

“Each piece of e-waste sent to MCMC, for example, will be sent to a specialist contractor. We ensure that materials containing elements that can be reused or disposed of through procedures are correctly handled.

Teo said the amount of e-waste will continue to increase, considering everyone has at least two gadgets, such as a laptop and a mobile phone.

Meanwhile, Teo said that more than 300 trees were planted by MCMC personnel during the Carbon Footprint En Route to Nature programme.- Bernama
