Setting up BSU a strategic move by CID, says Lee Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR: The Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director’s plans to set up a Behavioural Science Unit (BSU) is a very strategic and innovative move to increase police capabilities to address crimes and improve investigations.

Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said he hoped the unit will be set up as early as next year as it will greatly benefit the department.

“I feel that this unit will also help provide better analysis on crimes and behaviour of the offenders using science psychology, sociology and criminology.

“The unit will be entrusted to study criminals’ behaviour and patterns of crimes using data analysis to boost investigations,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Dec 17).

He was commenting on Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain’s plans to establish the BSU, as part of his efforts to revamp and improve the department.

“Members of the unit should have specialised training so that they could play an effective role to ensure the success of the BSU,” he said.

Lee also commended Comm Mohd Shuhaily for his innovative ideas to improve the CID.

“Since taking over as CID director, he (Comm Mohd Shuhaily) has initiated various measures and has brought innovative ideas to improve the efficiency of the department.

“I think among all the departments in Bukit Aman, CID is a very important one as it deals with all sorts of crimes.

“Setting up the BSU is a move in the right direction and I really hope it will be a great leap forward to boost the efforts and efficiency of the police in solving crimes,” he said.

Lee also welcomed the move by Comm Mohd Shuhaily in making it compulsory for CID officers to declare their assets.

“It is in line with good governance and integrity.

“Being law enforcers, they must always set the right example in terms of ensuring good governance, ethics and integrity,” he said.
