Youngster Justin raises bar by setting eyes on Thomas Cup spot

PETALING JAYA: Men’s singles shuttler Justin Hoh (pic) has set his sights on winning a spot in the Thomas Cup Finals squad next year.

The prestigious team event is set to take place from April 27-May 5 in Chengdu, China.

World No. 67 Justin, who will turn 20 in April, is keen to earn the right to represent the country for the first time in the tournament.

The youngster is currently the fifth-ranked men’s singles player in the country behind Lee Zii Jia (No. 11), Ng Tze Yong (No. 15), Leong Jun Hao (No. 39) and Cheam June Wei (No. 62).

While Zii Jia and Tze Yong are almost guaranteed places in the squad for the Thomas Cup, Justin will likely compete with Jun Hao and June Wei for the remaining spots.

“I hope to get the opportunity to play in the Thomas Cup as it’s a very big tournament,” said Justin.

“My aim next year is first to break into the top 32 and compete more against higher ranked players.”

Justin has shown plenty of promise since returning from an eight month injury layoff last month.

He stunned Jun Hao in the first round of the Syed Modi International in Lucknow before reaching the semi-finals of the Indian Masters in Assam.

Justin though was forced to retire from his last four match against Alwi Wijaya after injuring his right foot.

He is currently recovering from the injury and is expected to return to competitions next month.

“My recovery is going well and hopefully I can get back to full training next week,” said Justin.

“I was disappointed to get injured again after making my comeback but thankfully the issue is not serious.

“I also have time to recover and prepare for next year. I hope to avoid injuries after this.”

Justin’s first tournament next year will be the Thailand Masters from Jan 30-Feb 4 in Bangkok.
