Aaron-Wooi Yik and Tang Jie-Ee Wei through to second round
KUALA LUMPUR: National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik recovered from a shaky start to advance into the second round of the Malaysian Open at the Axiata Arena here on Wednesday (Jan 10).
World No. 4 Aaron-Wooi Yik fell in the first game against Danish duo Rasmus Kjaer-Frederick Sogaard but maintained their composure to bounce back with a brilliant performance in the final two games, winning the match 20-22, 21-13, 21-13.
Joining them in the second round is men’s doubles team Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, who made quick work of Thais Supak Jomkoh-Kittinupong Kedren.
Closing out their match with a 21-17, 22-20 score in 39 minutes, Sze Fei-Izzuddin will take on compatriots Aaron-Wooi Yik in the second round.
In the mixed doubles, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei came out on top against French pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue of France 21-17, 21-18 to book their spot in the second round.
Teammates Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See fought hard to overcome Taiwanese pair Chang Ko-chi-Lee Chih-chen 11-21, 26-24, 21-8.
The sole Malaysian women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei also made it through to the second round after beating Taiwan’s Sung Shuo-yun 21-18, 21-11.
