Floods: Klang residents placed on high alert, unusually high tides forecast

KLANG residents, especially those in coastal areas, are advised to be on high alert for floods for the next two days as significant high tides have been forecast.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday (Jan 14) the Klang Land and District Office warned that seawater levels in the area are expected to reach 5.1m on Jan 14 and 15 and the high-tide phenomena also poses a risk of flooding.

It said the forecast is based on the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s tide schedule for its Port Klang station.

It added that said sea levels are expected to rise to 5m at 7.53am and 5.1m at 8.31pm on Sunday.

Similarly on Monday, sea level readings at 7.53am are forecast to be around 4.8m, increasing to 5.1m by 9.11pm.

The high tides are expected to occur at the Port Klang station.

“With the highest sea water level readings forecast at 5.1m, residents are urged to be prepared and be aware of their surroundings,” it said.

In case of emergencies, the public can contact the National Emergency Line at 999 or the Klang District Disaster Operation Centre at 03-3371 6700 or 010-973 1963 (via WhatsApp).
