HK DJ Eric Cheng, 56, Dies 2 Days After Announcing Engagement To Longtime Girlfriend

Hong Kong veteran radio deejay and actor Eric Cheng died on Feb 3 at the age of 56.

His death came just two days after he shared news of his engagement to his longtime girlfriend, former Hong Kong national team roller skater, Wang Yanzhi.

The couple were in the midst of planning their upcoming wedding.

The news of Eric’s sudden passing came as a shock to many, including his fiancée who is still trying to come to terms with his death.

Speaking to Hong Kong media, she revealed that Eric had started feeling unwell on the night of Feb 2, and had bad diarrhea that persisted to the next day. She called for an ambulance, but Eric experienced sudden cramps and passed out before help could arrive.

Eric was sent to the hospital for emergency resuscitation, but was unable to pull through. The reason for his sudden illness and death is still under investigation.

According to a statement released by Metro Radio, Eric was admitted into the ICU in a comatose state, and was surrounded by his parents, family members, colleagues, and friends until his passing on the evening of Feb 3.

The unfortunate news had also come as a shock to Eric’s ex-wife, Hong Kong former actress Perrie Lai Hoi Shan, 56.

Recalling her last meeting with Eric at  a gathering last November, Perrie said: “He came up to greet me and I asked about his dad while he asked about my mum. He also spoke about his unhappiness about his job at the radio station, but perhaps he was just complaining. He also told me he had signed to a new company, and I later tuned in to The Queen Of News in support of him. I watched his performance in the very first episode, and I thought he did very well in the job he loves so much.”

Perrie also asked Eric about his health after hearing his voice sounding hoarse on the radio. “He said it was due to age,” she said.

When asked if he was a heavy drinker, she added: “When I arrived at the gathering that night, his face was already flushed from drinking. However, he has allergies, and I’ve never seen him drink much on previous occasions.”
