Singles blues as Tze Yong retires, Zii Jia down with sinus
SHAH ALAM: Men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong was forced to retire from his match against Singapore’s Jason Teh in the quarter-finals of the Asia Team Championships at the Setia Alam Convention Center on Friday (Feb 16) after experiencing pain in his back.
The 23-year-old has been playing after making his comeback from a lower back injury which he suffered in the Malaysian Open last month.
World No. 15 Tze Yong was selected as the first singles after world No. 10 Lee Zii Jia could not play due to a sinus issue.
Tze Yong was disappointed that he had to throw in the towel while trailing 1-3.
“I went to hospital to get treatment yesterday and felt that I could play,” said Tze Yong.
“But I felt some pain in my back and had to retire from the match.
“I have not recovered fully yet from my injury.”
