PETALING JAYA: The suspected conman who is currently wanted by the police has been linked to nearly RM400,000 in losses here.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Jaa’far, in a statement Thursday (May 2), said that the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Lau Kah Wing, would target senior citizens.
“His modus operandi includes offering ‘government aid’ to victims. The suspect would bring victims to the bank and along the way he would offer so-called state government investment schemes.
“Victims that were interested would then take out savings to ‘invest’. This suspect has 31 previous offences on his record and has been active since 2014,” he said.
In Petaling Jaya alone, losses linked to the suspect have been estimated to be around RM395,000.
He added that the latest case in Seapark saw losses of RM25,000.
“The suspect then brought the 78-year-old victim to a bank in Kepong before escaping under the pretence that he was going to collect monetary aid.
“The police urge the public to share any information regarding the suspect to the investigating officer Insp Gashwimpal Singh Sukhdev Singh at 016-364 9168.
“The police also advise all to be more aware and to not fall for any such offers or sweet talk that could then lead to being scammed,” he said.
On Wednesday (May 1) social activist Kuan Chee Heng, aka Uncle Kentang, said that the suspected con artist had been targeting the elderly around the SS2 area.
He explained on his Facebook page that the suspect would pretend to give out aid to victims but would then ask for bank details.
