Crocodile sightings cause fear among Melaka residents

MELAKA: Recent sightings of missing crocodiles have resulted in fear amongst residents living along Sungai Malim in Klebang.

The crocodiles, part of a livestock were stealthily sneaking into the area close to the riverbank where the residents keep their livestock.

Livestock breeder Muhammad Nur Iman Ahmad, 24, said he lost three of his goats to the saltwater crocodiles within three months.

“There are several crocodiles along the river and venturing close to the riverbank, risking lives.

“I had to incur a loss close to RM5,000 after losing my goats to the crocs,” he said on Wednesday (May 15).

Another resident Nozlan Ibrahim said residents living along the riverbanks depend on the river for their livelihood..

“Previously, we didn’t worry about getting attacked but now these reptiles are getting aggressive and hope the relevant authorities take immediate action,” said the 53-year-old.

Meanwhile, deputy chairman of Klebang Besar Development and Safety committee, Hamzah Ibrahim said that based on the frequency of sightings, the crocodile population here was likely to be four to five.

“These crocodiles were becoming more aggressive and attacking livestock,” he added.
