The Star Expected To Layoff More Than 100 Staff This Month

Star Media Group Bhd, or The Star, is expected to undergo “another round of cost cutting that will involve a job rationalisation exercise”, The Edge reported.

An insider revealed that more than 100 staff could be affected by this decision. If so, this would be the company’s 3rd cost cutting exercise concerning jobs since 2017.

Letters on the cost cutting exercise involving job rationalisation were issued to senior management members (on 15th June) and there are plans for another round of job cuts later this month for journalists,” the source told the publication.

The Edge also noted that Star Media’s video streaming service DimSum has “remain red” ever since its launch in November 2016. Despite offering Asian dramas and shows, locals haven’t been responding to the platform. In recent months, we also notice that The Star no longer offers free viewership for its online articles as readers are now required to register to gain digital access.

Following the shocking shut down of magazine publisher Blu Inc Media Sdn Bhd on 30th April, it was also reported this month that Media Prima group will be having another round of layoffs.
