Muhyiddin says he negotiated for no challengers for top Bersatu posts

SELAYANG: There are not expected to be any contests for top leadership positions at the upcoming Bersatu elections, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Bersatu president said that he held discussions and negotiated with party members to avoid any clashes in the lead-up to the October election in order to preserve party unity.

“The idea for negotiations came up during the party retreat last month. Among the motions proposed was for me to meet up with the top leadership and discuss ways to avoid clashes within the party,” he said at the Bersatu convention here on Saturday (July 13).

However, he did not reveal the outcome of the negotiations, saying that any announcement on the matter would be made later.

“Within the party leadership, there is a spirit of muhibbah (togetherness) and compromise … to give way or provide opportunities to other leaders,” he added.

Muhyiddin, who is also Pagoh MP, also said he hoped similar sessions could be carried out at division level nationwide.

“The upcoming election will decide if we win or lose the 16th General Election. Do not take this matter lightly, this is not only about our party’s survival but our race, country and religion,” he said.
