All mosques under Jakim to hold funeral prayers for slain Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh

PUTRAJAYA: All mosques under the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will perform funeral prayers following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh by Israel.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, said a directive has been issued to Jakim Director-General Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff and Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) Director Datuk Mohd Ajib Ismail regarding the matter.

“I am currently in Cairo and the directive has been made. We will gather the information first. If the body has already been bathed, I request all Jakim and Jawi mosques to hold the funeral prayer,” he said via WhatsApp to Sinar Harian on Wednesday (July 31).

Earlier, international news agencies reported that Israel attacked Ismail’s residence in Tehran, resulting in the martyrdom of him and one of his officers.

Ismail was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of the new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday (July 30).

Meanwhile, Ops Ihsan secretariat chairman Jismi Johari strongly condemned the attack saying that it proves that Israel does not desire a ceasefire as demanded by the United Nations Security Council and will not comply with international law and regulations

“We state our unwavering solidarity and togetherness with the entire Palestinian people who have lost their leader and all their family members,” he said.

Similarly, Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief advisor Nurul Izzah Anwar also condemned the killing and added that it is a grave violation of international law and principles of sovereignty

“It is a true tragedy that there are no red lines in the ongoing Palestinian conflict, and the loss of lives, including that of Ismail Haniyeh, only serves to perpetuate the cycle of violence and suffering,” said Nurul Izzah.

“We urge all nations to promote a ceasefire and work towards de-escalating tensions in the region. The international community must come together to support a lasting and sustainable peace that respects the Palestinian people,” she added.
